The site where Heathrow Airport now stands was originally a small hamlet called Heath Row, consisting of a few farms and cottages. In 1929, the Great Western Railway bought the land and planned to build an airport and train station to serve London. However, the project was put on hold due to the economic depression of the 1930s.
In the 1940s, with the outbreak of World War II, the British government saw the need for a large airport to support the war efforts. The land at Heathrow was acquired by the Air Ministry, and the construction of the airport began in 1944. The first runway was completed in 1946, and the airport was officially opened as London Airport in 1946.
